Stevenage 5K Race Report
A chosen few brave Harriers decided to attempt the first of the Stevenage 5K series and its new race course. It was inevitably dark and cold. Ironically, it was safe to wear shorts and a vest largely because the wind condition was thankfully virtually non-existent. Adam ended up running the race since he had entered it originally, despite his right calf injury. We managed to gather where the start position was, although the Organisers only placed the Start banner literally five minutes prior. A large amount of runners then congregated behind the sprayed line and most struggled to hear the marshal. The course was downhill and uphill throughout the dark and somewhat leafy cycle paths of Stevenage. Fortunately, no-one bumped into a silly motorbike cyclist that was seen earlier on the path prior to the race. The last two kilometres ended up largely uphill and no finish sign was imminent. Unsurprisingly, Simon Fawcett was the first Harrier home followed by the long-standing runner of Justin Openshaw, along with Veronica Singleton and Peter Lawley. Alison Cooper happily announced she achieved a personal best time in the well-lit race headquarters while we took advantage of the complimentary biscuits, crisps, bananas, hot and cold drinks. Not a bad night after all in the town of Stevenage

The Boys were at it again testing their wits at the one-lap course in Hyde Park. Today turned out to be a different kettle of fish for one runner. To begin with, we got lost within the underneaths of the Hyde Park underground tunnels and no name mentioned. Upon arrival at the bandstand, the one and only Alan Shillitoe appeared from no where. We all congregated until it was time to set off the for 3.1 mile trek. As usual, Adam was ahead and touched the first kilometre in 3.5 minutes and was on target for a 17.5 minute run. This was not to be the case because the mighty Justin decided to overtake Adam just before the 4 kilometre mark. Adam’s excuse, right calf injury and was deliberately holding back. Justin crossed the line a notch under 19 minutes and was the first Harrier home. Once we all crossed the 5K mark, including Joe Horseman, we all congratulated each others’ efforts and especially Keith who concluded that episode. As usual, we all headed straight to the pub restaurant at March Able for our brunch. Some of us ordered fish and chips, which turned out to be nothing more than pre-packed rubbish. Meanwhile, Keith bravely decided not to join us for the 2 for £8.20 lunch deal and probably made a good decision. We all returned home safely in Bedford and reformed for the Club’s quiz in which we finished third position. Not a bad day after all considering we were accompanied by a friendly Bedford and County runner who added a sparkle of hope

40 Harriers ran in the Blisworth 5 the club's 5m championship race. Well done firstly to Lynne Greenard who set a new LV60 club best time of 41.32. The previous best for the age category and distance had stood since 1999. Also well done to Pauline Bambury who was the 1st LV55 at Blisworth in a time of 38:39. The first three Harriers men at Blisworth were Simon Fawcett (28:50), Stuart Trevallion (30:19) and Adam Hills (30:24). The first three Harriers ladies were Carla Fisher (33:01), Anna Litchfield (34:23) and Sarah Lee (34:55).
In other races, three Harriers ran in the Thorney 5 including Samantha Linney whose 40:27 was a pb. Seven Harriers ladies ran in the Chicks Chase 5k including Katrina Darcy (29:35) and Elaine McCulloch (31:09) who ran their first race for the club. David Holt and Viv Kilgour took part in the Race the Train and finished in 1:43:18 and 2:10:21. David reports on the race below:
"Tywyn on the West coast of Wales is the base for the 25th Race the Train. 14 miles of slippery grass, mud, hills, fords, rough tracks, and even a bit of tarmac to take you out of town. The race starts with a blast of the train whistle, and then follows the valley up against strong winds to the turning point at 7 miles. That was the easy bit, as the next four miles in driving rain follows a very slippery single-track traverse, almost impossible to overtake, and anyone with road shoes still upright will not be for long! We get fleeting glimpses of the steam train complete with cheering passengers. The train stops en route, and has to turn, and so the quick and sure footed are in with a chance. This year the train returned to Tywyn in 1 hour 48 minutes and being my third attempt I was delighted to come in 4 minutes early to beat the train.
Extremely well organised, chip timing, regular drink stations, great goody bags. An extremely popular event, with 5 different categories: the Toddlers Trot, the 3.5 mile Tynllwynhen Challenge, 5.5 mile Dolgoch Challenge, 10k Quarry Challenge, and finally the 14 mile Rotary Challenge. All except the Toddlers will Race the Train, from various stations on route. They attract around 2,000 runners in all, get you entries in for next year, enjoy the fun and the well-earned famous honey ice cream at the end.
Tywyn (Gwynedd) is ideally located in mid Wales within easy reach of the southern Snowdonia National Park, not far from Dolgellau and Machynlleth, for great road and mountain biking, hiking up Cadair Idris, visiting the Alternative Technology Centre or visiting the many excellent tea shops".

Four Harriers ran in the Last Friday 5k in London. Justin Openshaw reports on the race:
Bedford Boys Away Day – Last Friday 5km , Hyde Park 25th July 2008
It’s Friday, Its 5 o’clock and its CRACKERJAACK !! Er….no, actually it’s Friday, its Hyde Park and its bloody hot ! What is it about public parks and 5kms ? Doesn’t the Great British public deserve any respite from marauding nutters in silly vests and tight shorts ? Quite frankly, no they don’t, and judging by some of the lunatics that have tried to make a mockery of the recent Doug Anderson and today’s race, they deserve to suffer. The train journey down was fast but the conversation crawled by at a snail’s pace as Farmer Joe and Farmer Paul discussed the merit of the common garden pea. I passed the time by applying amples of sun tan lotion, only to be told on completion by Paul that `its going to rain later`. Today was a day out for the Bedford Boys , as the Harriers were joined in numbers by Paul and Dave from Beds County (boo hiss). It had the feel of a Cross Country meeting as we were standing by the bandstand with runners from North Herts, Ampthill & Flitwick and Riverside Runners. Alan the Teaboy from The Ministry turned up with two friends in tow , and the Harriers numbers were complete. Adam was still grinning from his pb performance on Wednesday , Joe was still trying to hold in his stomach, and Alan was saying that he was worn out from all the tea stirring he had been doing. As per usual there was the staggered start. My game plan today was not to go off to quick and pace myself behind Paul. The weather although not particularly sunny, was very warm and muggy and somewhat uncomfortable for racing conditions. The race started and I could see Adam trying to push forward at a quick pace. After the first turn the runners headed down a slight decline, when a gang of student types (spots, long hair , attitude and no brains, and also dressed up as pirates) chased the front runners , screaming abuse, and waving plastic swords at them. I don’t know how close they got to the runners, but from where I was it looked like they ran onto the course and may have impeded the front runners. My GPS bleeped my first mile pace, and I was concerned that I may have gone off too slowly. I ran behind Paul all the way round , and managed to squeeze past him in the last few metres (tee hee). Adam was way ahead, and finished in 18.02 (still awaiting official times) which was very close to the pb he got on Wednesday (okay Adam, I`ve mentioned that twice now, and that’s got to be worth a fiver !). Alan was disappointed with his run, and Joe was still trying to work out to turn on his GPS by the time he had finished. All done and dusted, we posed for the obligatory group photos, before heading to the pub. It was only a quick visit , but Joe says I should mention that it is time Weatherspoons changed their menus and get more `guest beers` in, spoken like a true athlete. All in all, an enjoyable day, and another notch on the ol` race calendar.

On Tuesday night, five harriers ran in the Stevenage relays. Adam Hills reports on the race:
"It now seems that the Stevenage Relays clash with the Doug Anderson 5K race. However, we managed to avoid any clashes by showing genuine commitment and a good club morale by agreeing to take part. Most of us met at the stadium at 6 o’clock and we speedily drove down the country route and then the busy A1 trunk road. We managed to find the race Headquarters without too much difficulty and we began to prepare ourselves with the good help of Angie who organised the whole outing.
We had to wait for Noel and Graham to turn up as we were contemplating on having some of us running twice. Relieved as we could be when both guys turned up and we happily got ourselves prepared. As we were getting ready to take team photos, we realised that the mighty Bob Wells vanished. Anyway, we took some and eventually captured a nice team photograph.
Matt was privileged to start the first leg and Graham bravely took the final leg. As each of us took part in the ever exciting relay event, we all cheered at the main viewing point near the 2K mark. We were amazed to see Bob running far ahead once the gun shot and we clapped and cheered him on – knowing full well he was just warming up and everybody laughed.
To sum up, it was a great team event and an “ideal sharpener” for the Doug Anderson with a new personal best time by me and good performances from all the runners who did both. Next time, it might be worth considering doing both events if they are close together as you may also be able to sharpen your race performance. Once again, thank you to Angie for organising the whole outing and to all the runners who made the event a good one to watch:

Justin Openshaw reports on the Milton Keynes 10k:
"This was the last race in the Grand Prix Series, which was being held at Milton Keynes Open University Campus. It had been very hot and sunny all day , and I was hoping that the heat would die down come the evening. However , race conditions were very uncomfortable , as although the sun had faded, the heat and humidity had increased. As such, it was very difficult to breathe during the race, and myself and the runners that I talked to afterwards struggled in the muggy and oppressive conditions. This is the first time I have ran this course, which follows the cycle routes around Milton Keynes, along paths , and up and down the subways. As such, I found it quite a boring and souless course, although it does have PB potential. There was one water point on the course at the half way point, and I made the mistake of throwing the bottle away. As the race wore on , my mouth got as dry as the bottom of a budgie cage and I stopped in the last mile to take a drink from a spectator's water bottle. 14 Harriers participated in the race, and we all found it uncomfortable in the heat".`
Well done to Larry Corkrey who was the 1st MV70 at Milton Keynes and the 1st in his age group in the 2008 East Midlands Grand Prix series overall. Among the Harriers running pb's was Gary Butler.

Sylvia Jones reports:
This Saturday whilst on a hen weekend in Brighton, I left my fellow hens asleep in bed whilst I snuck off to run the Brighton and Hove 5k time trial. Beautiful Hove Park is very similar to Bedford Park but with a much steeper hill and as the run is two and a half laps I faced that hill 3 times. The time trial is free and run weekly by a very friendly group of volunteers. The organisation is extremely slick and there is a cafe on site for a post run fry up. I would thoroughly recommend it if you are in Brighton for the weekend. (Sylvia completed the 5k in 33:30)

Among the Harriers running pb's were David Roberts, Robin Fiander, Lynne Greenard, Philip Brummell, David Fletcher, Lynn Christison and Fiona Fiander. Three Harriers took part in the Man vs Horse race. David Holt reports:
"The Man v Horse Marathon began in June 1980 following a chat over a pint in the Neuadd Arms Hotel in the smallest town in Britain. The then Landlord, Gordon Green overheard two men discussing the relative merits of men and horses. The enterprising Gordon, never one to miss an opportunity to promote Llanwrtyd Wells and improve business at his hotel, decided to put it to the test. And so began Green Events and its first and longest standing, now Internationally acclaimed event, The Man versus Horse Marathon. The race starts in the Town Square and is run over a 22 mile course through some of the finest scenery in Mid Wales using a mixture of farm tracks, footpaths, forestry roads and open moorland. There are a few short distances over tarmac. It is very hilly with a total ascent of 3000 feet and several river crossings. It took 25 years before a man finally beat a horse; Huw Lobb (Beds and County) won the 2005 race in 2hrs and 5mins beating the fastest horse by 2 minutes, and £25k richer!
This years race winner was a horse and rider; Geoffrey Allen riding Dukes Touch of Fuw. The 9 year old Arab Cross crossed the finish line in 2:18:13, closely beating the fastest man, John McFarlane, whose time was 2:18:38. I was very pleased to finish in under 3 hours for the first time, and with all but the first three riders and horses crossing the line behind me. However with the horses starting 15 minutes behind the runners another 6 beat me on adjusted times. Cliff Smith also achieved a PB on the course and this stands him in good stead for his Marathon des Sables revenge in 2010. Viv Kilgour finished a few minutes later and we then enjoyed our success laying in the sun watching other runners and riders struggle up the final steep hill to cross the line".
David Holt:
Tom Brassington was the sole Harrier in the Abbey 10 finishing in 50:59.

However, the first mention goes to Carla Fisher who won a Silver Medal in the 2008 Sprint Triathlon Age Group World Championships in Vancouver, Canada. Carla finished the Swim 1.1km (reduced from 1.5km due to 12.5 degrees Celesius water temperature) 40k Bike and 10k Run in 1:27:19.
11 Harriers took part in the 2nd race in the Bedford Sprint Triathlon. The overall winner of the race was James Elworthy in 59:09. Well done also to Sue Peacock and Elise Allen who took part in their 1st triathlon's.
In other races, Simon Fawcett ran in the Southend Half Marathon and finished in 6th position in 1:16:43 , Jim Gannon took part in the Blenheim Palace Triathlon and finished in 1:32:33, Jason Goodman set a new 10k pb of 39:59 in the Dorney Dash 10k , Julian Turnbull ran the Ferry Meadows 5k in 20:25 and Samantha Linney completed the St Albans Half Marathon in a new pb of 1:58:08.

Warm, muggy, and polluted….but enough about the ale, here's the race report. Once again , we found ourselves in the picturesque Hyde Park , the setting for the monthly 5km race organised by the Serpentine Running Club. Our numbers were swelled by the addition of Adam, who was competing in his first Hyde Park 5km. We arrived in good time, only to discover, that being Half Term, the park was rather busy, and that also, there was substantial gardening work in progress around the course. The air quality today was very poor, hazy, & humid and close….infact it was so close, it was almost touching. Joe warmed up by chasing some horses down Rotten Row with his camera, whilst Keith did his one knee stretch, and Adam skipped to the loo. We met up with the rocket scientist Alan S, only to be told later by a work colleague that he was the teaboy ! The race started, and once again there seemed to be quite a fast start. Adam set off in front of me , and I kept him in sight as we twisted and turned around the course. I really struggled today with the humidity and struggled with my breathing and found myself labouring later on. As with all 5kms, its eyeballs out, but having done this 5 times now (including today), I don't think it’s a particularly fast course, due to all the sharp turns, and human traffic. Adam clocked in at 18.45 (his time) and was first Harrier home, followed by myself, Alan, Joe and bringing up the rear , keith. We all agreed afterwards that we found it difficult in the uncomfortable and oppressing heat. After the race we headed over to Tower Bridge to look at a recently installed telescope that can supposedly see direct to New York. By the Tower Of London, I spotted an original, brick, circular building that I could recall had particular significance and historical merit. Having drawn everyone's attention to it, I couldn't for the life of me remember what the significance was , or what the stupid thing was used for. Like we tend to do in all such situations, we adjourned to the nearest pub. After our refuel we walked along the riverside taking in the telescope, and all the sights. Bringing some culture to proceedings, I suggested we visited the Tate Modern. After all it was nearby , free, and er….it was my round. We spent all of 6 minutes in the Tate, Adam was bemused , Keith amused, and Joe abused. Joe rather cruelly pointed out that I was dragging my heals as it was my round ! So once again, we went in search of bounty and ended up in the Slug & Lettuce. Which Adam promised me was a cheap establishment, but I can assure him was not ! The day was ended, with us sitting on a broken down First Capital Connect Train at Blackfriars for 25 minutes, before we lost patience and headed over to St. Pancras instead. On the cycle ride home from the station, I discovered a man trying to transport a micro wave oven on the crossbar of his bike….and I couldn't help thinking , `yes Britain really does have talent` !

Well done again to Lynne Greenard who improved her LV60 10k club best time by over 4 mins at Hatfield to 51:20. Also running in the race were Robin Fiander who did 49:09 and Fiona Fiander who finished in 1:00:29. Robin reports on the race below:
"With memories still fresh from the heat when running the Eye 10k just over 2 weeks ago, Lynee Greenard, Fiona and I (with support from Keith Lakin) set out for Essex under leaden skies. There was a tantalising glimpse of sunshine as we passed Baldock, but as soon as we arrived at Hatfield Broad Oak the wind increased and the rain poured down, and we sat in the car in the quagmire of a car park and summoned up the courage to emerge. The village, a very attractive little place, was holding a flower festival and fete, and it was such a shame that the weather was ruining the event. There was a little paddock proclaiming 'pony rides' but I think that the ponies had not learned how to swim and had been led back to their warm stables.
The race itself is large for a small village, with over a 1000 participants. The atmosphere is is warm and friendly, and the event is chip timed. The course is a figure of 8 centred on the village, so supporters are able to encourage the runners without venturing too far away from the centre. The route is flattish and picturesque and we would very much recommend other Harriers to try it in future years.
As for the race itself, despite the wind and the rain, Lynne achieved both a pb and a club best time, chip time 51.20. She hates the heat and doesn't mind the cold and wet! Fiona got back into her stride in this race and achieved 1.00.29. My hopes for a pb were dashed as a result of having to tie my shoe laces not once, not twice, but three times (idiot), and despite a strong finish I couldn't get below 48 minutes.
Keith stood with his brother and family and shouted encouragement, and resisted the temptation top consume hamburgers. I think the water trickling down his neck dampened his appetite. But we made up for it afterwards with a fine Italian meal in Bishops Stortford, and toasted Lynne's great achievement. She's going to have a good year....if it's not too hot".

Around a dozen Harriers took part in the Grizzly which is a demanding multi-terrain challenge over around 19 miles. The first Harrier to finish and the first lady overall in the race - for the second year in succession - was Donna McEwen in 2:45:49. Donna's time was a 7 mins 12 secs improvement on her 2007 run. The second Harrier to finish was David Holt in 3:00:29 and the third Harrier was Anna Litchfield in 3:11:18.
Anna Reports on the Race:
The Grizzly was a fantastic event, with a number of Grizzly virgins
from Bedford Harriers. The weather was good (the calm before the storm)
although there were a couple of showers including a hail shower which
Donna missed out on because she was running too fast!
We covered just over 19 miles of shingle beach, hills, tracks, streams,
hills, muddy bogs, hills (steep enough to require a rope!), more tracks,
more muddy bogs, hills, woods, a mile stretch of shingle beach, the
infamous Stairway to Heaven, hills, downhills, shingle beach and the
finish line. I decided after the 3rd hill that I might make it if I
walked up the hills! We were cheered on by the entire population of East
Devon, wonderful bands to rival the Great North Run and enthusiastic
marshals. The last 100 metres was on road, but by then the legs had
gone. They were somewhat revived by the 'showers' provided by the local
Fire Service.
Big congratulations to Donna who retained her ladies title in tremendous
form - it's always harder to hold onto the title. Well done too to Viv
who ran brilliantly despite having felt lousy the day before with a bad
cold.
We had a mantra for the race which really holds true - 'This is Fun!'

Richard Piron took part in the Clumber Park Classic Duathlon and completed the event in 2:06:51. The race is a World Championship Qualifier and Richard now has a good chance of qualifying for the World Championship.

Well done also to Noel Jones who improved his marathon pb by 14 mins 42 secs at Draycote when finishing in 3:40:42
Eight Harriers ran in the Eastern Vets XC. Avril Monmont, Alistair Vile and David Sutcliffe picked up individual age category prizes and Bill Billington was 2nd in his category. Tony Barnes, Justin Openshaw and Alistair Vile were the 3rd men's team. (Race Photos)
David Sutcliffe reports on the race:
Bright sunshine but frozen lumpy conditions underfoot greeted the Harriers' squad of eight runners, well loaded with experience, at Arrington Park, overlooked by the impressive frontage of Wimpole Hall. With a small overall field, and many clubs represented, the team contests were very limited. Good packing in the Mens' section enabled the Harriers' to take third place out of five clubs behind Beds & County and Ely Runners, while the Harriers' 70+ team extended their unbeaten run to two races (the full race result as it happens will show an absence of team opposition).

Five Harriers took part in the Last Friday in Month 5k in Hyde Park on Friday 25th January and six Harriers ran in the South of England XC Championships at Parliament Hill on Saturday 26th. Justin Openshaw and David Sutcliffe report on the races.
Last Friday 5k - report by Justin Openshaw
A few of us decided to travel down to London to compete in the `Last Friday Of The Month 5km` around Hyde Park. The event is a monthly race organised by Serpentine Running Club. We met at the Band Stand on a cold and windy day. The race has a staggered start , the first start is for the sub 21 minute runners, and the second start, which starts 2 minutes later, is for runners doing 22 minutes or over. The race is a 5km loop around Hyde Park , running around the Serpentine Lake and back to the start/finish. Just before our race , a presentation was made to a Lady from the Serpentine Club who had achieved an average age grade score of over 93 % last year. A staggering feat.
The Race started and after a sharp turn after 200 metres I found myself running into quite a strong cross wind. The route was first a triangle and a loop around the lake to the finish. The wind was quite strong at times, especially around the lake, there was also a small incline on route then a steeper climb just before the finish. Alan and Keith both achieved PBs in difficult conditions. Alan then ran back to work, whilst we changed in nearby toilets. Keith said he knew a nice pub within 15 minutes walk…. 75 minutes later, and after passing about 20 other similar establishments we came across it. Being Burns Night , we all had the Haggis, and yes…of course I bought all the drinks as per usual.
Harriers times:
Justin Openshaw (19.07),
Alan
Shillitoe (20.05) pb,
Joe
Horsman (20.49),
Kathy Horsman (21.17), Keith Gray
(21;47) pb.
South
of England XC Championships - report by David Sutcliffe
SAT 16 JAN PARLIAMENT HILL FIELDS, HAMPSTEAD HEATH.
TEAM POSITION - 50th of 62 completing teams. Winners Beds & County with 6
runners in first 38, by 6 points from New Ham and Essex Beagles.
Individual winner was UK International Frank Tickner of Wells City
Harriers in 46m 14s, while much interest focused on a convincing win in
the Ladies' u/20 race by Steph Twell, European champion and a runner of
huge promise.
Ankle-deep mud in parts, some fast downhill sections such as the extra
long home straight and short sharp hills which hit you when least
expected, are regular features at the 'Spiritual Home of South of England
Cross Country' which requires every bit of effort over an unusual distance
of 15k.
Following the recent County Champs, again a case of 'everyone must finish'
with six required to compete as a team. When mud-splattered runners
completed the first of their three gruelling laps, it was evident that
conditions were 'as normal'. The whole team however were up for it and
with Steve Earley the first Harrier home, a few places short of the first
200,a very solid overall performance was the outcome.
My thanks everyone for a great day at The Heath.
NB Next Championship race - The 'National' of course on 23rd Feb at
Alton Towers - line up of seven Harriers and BUFF heading up the
arrangements, so another entertaining day is guaranteed

DAY AT THE RACES
Two trophies successfully defended, a third picked up, and second and third
places in the two other contests, amounted to quite a day out.
When 'heads were counted' at the start of proceedings on the wind-swept grassy
acres of the RAF playing fields at distant Halton, where down jackets rather
than track suits were the order of the day, it was apparent that the Ladies
would have their work cut out - three required to count for both Senior and
Veteran contests, and just three runners present.
So to take the silverware back to its rightful place, it was a case of 'win or
bust' - and win they did, with Anna, Sally and Veronica comfortably disposing of
the three opposing clubs in both sections, confounding any suspicions that such
a result might be unlikely. With Sally taking first Vet 40, place medals for
three age groups were shared between our three runners under the multiple award
formula operated by the County.
After missing out by two points last time round, a win in the Men's Vet 40
section was always on the cards, given the strength in depth of this section of
the club. Getting home by over fifty points was a satisfying result, headed up,
as the results below show, by Tony Dadd and Steve Earley (first and second M40's
overall) the other two scorers being Kevin Willett and Richard Piron.
These four, plus Simon Fawcett and Tony Barnes, made up the scoring six in a
bid for the Senior Mens title, taken this year by Ampthill and Flitwick, who
placed six runners in the first eighteen, against Harriers six in the first
twenty-three. The 'losing margin' was 26 points - rather less than our 99 point
deficit behind Beds and Co. last year.
Meanwhile in the M50+ contest, Richard Piron, Neil Lovesey, Joe Horsman and Andy
Purdy took third team place, with Richard taking second M45 and M50 as well
as scoring in all three team results! Of the other individual awards, Tony
Dadd's M40 status as County Champion for this group is probably a 'Harriers
First', while Bob Wells(M60) and Bill Billington(M70 this time) were in their
usual good form in again picking up winner's medals.
So well run everyone who ran, including 'support runners' Simon Costin, Jason
Goodman, Alistair Fadden and Justin Openshaw who all finished in the top two
thirds of the field and thereby contributed to such good team results. My thanks
for an entertainning 'Day at the Races'.
The individual ladies medals (with race positions) were -
Anna 3rd Lady, 2nd LV35
Sally 2nd LV 35, 1ST LV40
Veronica 2nd LV45, 3rd LV40
David.
