10 Bedford Harriers took part in the inaugural "Bedford Clanger" on Sunday
14th March organised by Noel Jones. The route was a 27 mile circular course,
mostly off road following footpaths and where possible staying in open
countryside. We started at Box End Park and circumnavigated around Bedford
passing through or near Box End, Bromham, Oakley, Clapham, Brickhill, Salph
End, Willington, Cople, Cardington, Shorts Town, Elstow and Kempston. 57
runners took part including myself as sweep.
Competitors were given written instructions describing the route. Three check
points kept track of runners and provided water, squash, jelly babies,
biscuits and two types of cake. We were blessed with great weather and the
river had thankfully subsided to normal levels so the alternative route did
not have to be used. There are quite a few photos at
I'd like to thank everyone that helped for their support. It wouldn't have
been possible without the willing help of many friends within the Bedford
Harriers and in the Fetch Everyone community (www.feteveryone.com).
Sylvia Jones and Lynn Christison kept the HQ running smoothly and had the hot
drinks waiting for our return. To top it all off there were home made Bedford
Clangers to eat.
The race was put on to raise money for the Bedford Hospitals Charity. The
total raised looks to be in excess of £430.
