Most Improved Runner : 2009

Table by Tony Dadd

We have 4 years' worth of data now - 2006, 2007,2008 and 2009. I compared races run in 2009 to 2006-8 at the same distance (but not necessarily the same race!). So the best 5 mile age-graded % from 2009 was compared to the best 5 mile age-graded % set in 2006-8 etc. This wasn't restricted to the 6 main road race distances so 12K, 15M, 30K and 20M were also included. For each distance comparison I calculated the raw % improvement and also the "adjusted" improvement, which allows for the fact that faster runners have less room for improvement.

Runners were allowed into the final table if they had at least 4 distances at which they had improved and their mean adjusted improvement was positive (ie they didn't get worse on average !). They were then ranked by the mean adjusted improvement.

  N Mean Mean_adj
Renette Wolvaardt 4 5.90% 14.5%

Northants Ultra 34, Big Cow TriFest Aquathlon
 & Dorney Dash 10k

(Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June)

Noel reports on the Northants Ultra 34:

3 Harriers took part in the Northants "Shires and Spires" Ultra this weekend. Noel Jones completed the 34 mile course it in 6 hours 38 minutes. Darren Miller completed his first ultra distance race in 6 hours 54 minutes. Paul Hudson completed approximately 20 miles having started late. We were given a map book and sent on a tour of some of Nothamptonshire's picturesque countryside. I had loaded the course into my Garmin which made me a popular person for a while! It was a wet start but the weather went against the forecast and cleared up after about an hour so for most of the race we had near perfect conditions. As usual it was a social event. I started running with a friend that I met last year on a similar activity and soon met up with another person that I ran another race with last year. For a while we had a group of a dozen or more running together and it felt like a Saturday morning club run. Towards the end we fragmented a bit as people had varying amounts left in their legs. We were well supported at the checkpoints with fruit cake, savouries and water. Trish Miller kept popping up around the course doing support duties and we even had a 'fetchpoint'.

Darren reports on the Northants Ultra 34:

To say I was nervous would be an understatement. Well why should I be?, I have run some marathons before and it's only a further 8 miles. I tried to fool myself!

I arrived with the wife and the rain was sheeting down at Lamport Hall. I registered then began the shall I wear shorts or trousers, will I need my camelbak routine. I ended up in shorts with the camelbak. Met up with Noel from the club, good to see a friendly face (albeit a seasoned Ultra man!)

I think there were about 50 brave souls to ready the assault on the Northants countryside. I believe there were at least 10 of us running our first ultra so I felt in good company. We were provided with mapbooks and compasses were recommended. I had the mapbook and relied heavily on Noel who had the route programmed into his Garmin.

The run - lots of hills, beautiful houses and good company. Yes believe it or not it was enjoyable and I would do it again. I feel like I have been run over by a steam roller but I expected that. The organisation was spot on, good well fuelled checkpoints, possibly hard to find at times, both savoury, sweets and drinks with lots of support provided. Even a fetchme team to cheer us on and provide food.

Anyone that is thinking of doing this, it is well worth it. You actually get to walk up the hills as it is the done thing!

Not overly impressed with my time but it was difficult to gauge the pace and well, it was the first one.

Simon Fawcett and Lisette Bonin-Casey took part in the 750m swim and 5k run Big Cow TriFest Aquathlon. Simon finished in 35.22 and Lisette was the 4th lady and 1st LV40 in 38.26.

Edinburgh Marathon, Last Friday 5k
& Ipswich Jaffa Friday 5

Adam's time of 16.12 was an 43 secs improvement on the previous MV35 5k club best of 16.57 which was set back in 2006. Adam has already set club best times in 2009 for the 10k, 10m and half marathon. Across in Ipswich, Kevin and Zoe Willett ran in the Ipswich Jaffa Friday 5 finishing in 30.28 and 46.47 respectively. Kevin reports on the race:

"A spur of the moment decision led to us entering this race. We went for a few days break in Suffolk and whilst Zoe was reading Runners World she remarked on how adventurous and ambitious some of the runners profiles were. With this in mind she turned to the race directory and commented the Ipswich Jaffa evening 5 mile race was not too far away. An impromptu decision was made to do the race later that day! It turned out to be a race very similar to the Colworth 5. The course was undulating multi terrain with a testing climb through a wooded section in the last mile (more hill training required). We enjoyed a well organised race and the rest of our break!!"

Over in France, Bob Wells ran in a 10km organised by the Section Athletisme Toulouse Universite Club (SATUC) and finished in a new MV60 club best time of 39:02.Bob's time (which beats his Standalone club best time) placed him in the eighties overall and won the V  (over 60) category. For this, Bob received a trophy, a clock and a can of deodorant. However the biggest challenge of the day for Bob, was the brief PA interview that each prize-winner was given by the 'speaker'. Bob doubts that anybody understood what he was trying to say but they were very nice about it anyway (Obviously 35-hour working weeks, sun and wine are good for running!).

Bob now has a flat on the western edge of town with some limited space for visitors. He would be pleased to meet up with any Harriers who venture to this part of France (about 70miles from where Paula does he altitude training).

Stanwick 10k

 Gabs Race Report:

It’s with much anticipation and excitement that I stood at the start of the Paris Marathon at the Arc de Triomphe, wondering how the run and course would go. With hampered training (colds and injury), I was determined to be as relaxed as possible, to enjoy the course and run to the conditions, accepting whatever time I achieved. Five minutes before the start, the sun rose above the rooftops, basking the whole street in bright sunshine, it was going to be a warm day.  At 8:45 we were off and running down the Champs des Elysees towards the Place de la Concorde, along the Rue de Rivoli and up towards the Bastille.

The Bastille was the first of many water stations and the increased congestion provided a heightened sense of danger which was repeated at all subsequent feeding points; basically, the water and food was laid out on one side of the road, it was a case of dodging runners as they weaved in and out to pick up a drink, whilst also skidding over slippery banana and orange skins that had been thrown on the floor.

The route headed off out of the city centre, the steady stream of mass runners masking the undulating course towards a very large park, the de Vincennes. This provided some shelter from the sun but like other parts of the course was a little crowded due to the narrow pathways. This was not helped when a group of Parisian Sunday runners, insisted on running against the tide – bloody French!

Heading back to the Bastille (1/2 way) mark, I managed to spot my family, stopped to give them a quick kiss, hug and photo shot then continued on towards the River Seine via Boulevard Henri IV. What a magnificent and fantastic sight that appeared; the Notre Dame and the Golden Globe rooftop of the Hotel De Invalides. As we ran along the river bank, the stunning sights continued – with the Eiffel Tower, Trocadero, Grand Palais and all the beautiful architecture that lined the river.

The pace was steady and allowed time to look around and enjoy the scenery.  It was along this part of the course 25 – 33km, that I started to feel my legs tighten up and was conscious that I would have to be careful and nurse myself around. The underpasses provided welcome relief and shade from the sun but did not help the legs with the declines and inclines. I eventually came up with a strategy to run a km and then walk for 15 – 30 seconds, just to ensure I would not cramp up.

At 35km, there was a feed station serving wine and cheese, it was very tempting to stop completely, walk the rest of the way and enjoy the beaujolais!  but no, I had to continue and complete the course the best I could. Leaving the River Seine and heading into a beautiful park called the de Boulogne, the route took us past the impressive racecourse Longchamp.

With 2km to go, the end was in sight and I put all my effort into finishing well, up the Avenue Foch (quite an appropriate street name to finish a marathon). I collected my medal and free breakfast (banana, orange, apple, raisins, apricots, coffee) and went to meet my family at the Eiffel Tower, to begin a 3-day sightseeing tour.

If you cannot enter the London and/or fancy an alternative spring marathon, I would highly recommend the Paris. The scenery was beautiful, the course was undulating but not too taxing and the camaraderie amongst the runners was very good. Although my time 3:38:41 was not a PB, I was very happy, considering that I had an interrupted training routine, and had not had to pull up without finishing the course.

Congratulations to the other Harriers that also took part - Dave, Nora, Keith and the lady from Steve Crane’s group but most importantly to the 2 people that helped me train and prepare for the run – Terry McEwen and Liz Stockton.

Sandy 10, Reading Half Marathon, Thorney 10k

Montauban Semi Marathon
(Sunday 20th March 2009)

There were many excellent performances by Harriers at the Sandy 10 - the club's 10 mile championship race. The overall winner of the race was Adam Mills in a new MV35 club best time of 55:30. Also amongst the award winners were Veronica Singleton who was the 1st LV45 in 1:12:44 and  Pauline Bambury who was the 1st LV55 in a new club best time of 1:20:38. The first three Harriers ladies -  Carla Fisher (1:11:23), Sarah Lee (new pb of 1:11:43) and Veronica Singleton won the ladies team award. Martin Leech also recorded a MV65 club best time with a time of 1:14:17. The 2nd and 3rd Harriers men to finish were Gareth Waite (1:02:43) and Morgan Walters (1:04:51). Among the Harriers achieving pb's was Graham Short (1:09:15), who ran his first for four years. Other Harriers setting pb 's included David Roberts. Alison Cooper, Darren Miller, Linda Watson, Susan Farr and Gyll Brunton. If any other Harriers ran pb's at Sandy, let's know at hello@bedfordharriers.co.uk

Katarina reports on the race:

Fortunately the weather was kind to us for the Sandy 10. There were a fair few Harriers participating today, which enabled us to win the Erlensee Cup. The atmosphere was good throughout the event, the course was well signposted, the water was just where we needed it, the marshals in their hats were helpful (although one refused to let me jump on his bike!), a few cute donkeys to chat to along route and the hill was interesting. I did not know what to expect from the course, having never ran it before not wanting to look at the route map beforehand, but I certainly would consider running the Sandy 10 again.

Congratulations must go to Adam Mills for a superb time, gaining overall first place. Veronica Singleton received a first for LV45 category. Pauline Bambury received a first for LV55 category. The Sandy 10 2009 Ladies Team was also won by Bedford Harriers:  Carla Fisher, Sarah Lee and Veronica Singleton. I think that we all did very well so congratulations to all!

Katarina

Three Harriers ran in the Reading Half Marathon. Richard Dorman was the first to finish in 1;28:40, Jenny Lovesey did 1:51:14 and Jon Sidwick ran 1:59:16.

Tim Price and Samantha Linney ran in the Thorney 10k. Tim did 44:40 and Samantha finished in a new pb of 49:51.

Over in France, Bob Wells ran in the Montauban Semi Marathon and finished in 1:26:20. Below, Bob reports on the race:

My second attempt to race in S.W. France was considerably more successful than at the Blagnac Half where my medical certificate was rejected because it did not mention the word competition. (Incidentally, I have subsequently spoken with a budding local triathlete who has had to go back to his doctor three times to get each athletic competition added in sequence!). The town of Montauban organised a 10K, Half Marathon and Marathon – all starting simultaneously and using the same roads.  The marathon was two laps, the Half one and the 10K took a short cut towards the end of the first lap. I chose to enter the Half.

The pre-race scenario was quite familiar although I have previously only been offered pre-race refreshments at the Boston Marathon. The highly-choreographed musical warm-up session reminded my of our chairman’s efforts at Wootton but the volume and energy painfully far exceeded anything witnessed in rural Beds. I imagine Steve Crane would have some wry comments about the course (trip-you kerbs and unmarked posts in the middle of some the cinder track sections) but the roads were effectively closed for the race by the army (I suspect a soldier with a gun would be more effective than a few attractive high-viz jackets at Oakley bridge!). And with drinks, oranges and bananas provided every 5km there was little chance to work up an appetite for Sunday lunch. The route was interesting and attractive (around the town and across the Garonne bridges) enough to attract many non-racers for an organised walk round the 10K course in the afternoon.

Most runners found the weather (15C) cool and wore sleeves but, somewhat to my surprise, my conspicuous sleeveless Harriers’ vest did not attract a single comment (to me). I was well-pleased with my 1:26:??.??(timing to 0.01sec!)displayed on the board in the finish area because this was my first race for some time and my enthusiasm had been waning a little.  It made me 34th overall and 1st V3 (= MV60).

It was the post-race session that was very different to the UK. Having returned your chip you were immediately invited to enjoy quite substantial refreshments. Then you passed through a large marquee with “ 3 médicins, 6 kinés, 3 podologues et 5 ostéopathes” to look after you (possibly if you had overeaten?). Following that you put your race number in a raffle (for a weeks’s holiday for 2 in Tunisa) and received a wooden box and a book of tickets. You took these tickets to stalls in the associated fair (locals in period costume, bands, dancing displays, roundabouts for children ….) and collected goodies from local businesses for each ticket. And what goodies to fill the wooden box! -

-A bottle of Montauban Marathon wine

-250g of local honey

-A pair of running socks

-A wrist-band holder for your audio system (I had to have that one explained to me by somebody half my age)

-3 cakes

-A sweet pastry

-Fresh bread

-A carton of orange juice

-3 packets of Smarties-like sweets

-A ticket for month’s use (EUR 34.90) of a local gym

-A ball-point pen from a young man who offered personally to prepare a VO2 training plan for me to attain my objectives

and a Montauban Tee shirt

(The entry fee for this event was 10 euros)

The 10K prize presentation was a lavish affair involving lots of flowers and embracing. I was not sorry that I had to catch a train back to Toulouse and missed the Half awards ceremony – I’m still having trouble remembering to shake hands with colleagues when I first see them every day and I’m not yet quite ready to be publicly embraced by another V3 with a moustache!.

Still learning.

Adam's time of 1:12:28 was a new MV35 club best time and was also 4 secs faster than the Harriers senior man best time of 1:12:32 which was set by Nick Berrill back in 2001. Adam was the 9th man to finish at Milton Keynes. Quite a few Harriers also set pb's at Milton Keynes - if you got one let's know at hello@bedfordharriers.co.uk

Veronica Singleton ran in the Wymondham 20 and was the 1st LV45 in a time of 2:39:07. Veronica was out of competition for a year due to an injury sustained while dancing and this was the furthest she had run since the Snowdonia Marathon in 2006.

Tim Price ran in the Chilly Willy 5K and finished in 21:05.

Sally Cartwright was the sole Harriers representative in the national cross country in Nottingham on Saturday 7th March. Sally's time will be put on the site when available.

Around 30 Harriers also ran in the Grizzly and the Grizzly Cub at Seaton in Devon - which was probably the best ever turnout for the event. 24 of the Harriers ran in the Grizzly 20m+ multi-terrain race including Gareth Waite who was the first Harrier to finish in 3:00;18, David Holt which was the 2nd in 3:09:18, Donna McEwen  who was the 3rd in 3:14:07 and Justin Openshaw who was the 4th in  3:26:41. Nine Harriers ran in the Cub race including Andy Sewell who was the 1st Harrier in 1:18:29.

Justin Reports:

The Grizzly as the name suggests is not for the faint hearted. I put my entry in last year with the comfort that as it was so far off I would have plenty of time to train and be ready. Of course, as the time got nearer I found myself completely out of time , and had missed all The Grizzly weekend training as I was either working, going to football matches or simply couldn't be bothered to get out of bed. More fool me , anyway , myself, Alistair and Tom travelled down to Sidmouth on the Saturday. A long boring journey was broken up with a game of Trivial Pursuit 1980`s edition, which Al` managed to balance the board on his lap, and me rolling the dice in the back seat , whilst Tom constantly fiddled with his blackberry. We arrived late afternoon and strolled into sleepy Sidmouth past the antique shops and `closed` signs down to the front. Alistair regaled us with his local knowledge and 15 seconds later we found a local pub to shelter in. In the evening we met up with the bulk of The Harriers who were staying in Sidmouth and went out for a meal. I am not sure if 4 pints of IPA was a good nutritional prep` but it took my mind off what was to come. Steve Gaunt had to pull out due to his knee problem, and Bill Khinda somehow hurt himself the day before whilst walking on the beach and dropped out. On the day of  the race it was cold and very windy….but hey , no snow. We lined up at the start just eager to get going. The race started &away the masses ran along the shingle beach and looped around up the hill through a caravan park towards one of the many cliff tops. Annoyingly, I had to take my shoe off as I had got some stones in from the beach. I lost Gareth after about 2 miles as we all plodded up, up and up. I can not recall the exact route or course, suffice to say, that a great deal of it was impossible to actually run. Runners in front who stopped and walked up the inclines were difficult to pass as the tracks were narrow and muddy. I struggled with the steep downhill sections and my left calf muscle really tightened at 4 miles. It seemed that the majority of the course was either climbing up very steep inclines or struggling down very steep declines. There was a stretch at about the 8 mile point where you could actually run for a couple of miles. I passed Cliff at about 13 miles, but other than him I did`nt see any other Harrier on route. The last 3 miles were very tough as we came off  the shingle beach and yet again had to more or less climb a very large hill. The marshalls were very supportive all the way round, and I took water at every water station. The run ended coming off the beach and back towards where we started. I saw David Holt in the crowd by the finish line, then Paul Harris who came in just after me. I managed to meet up with Gareth who had been back and showered as we watched the other Harriers finish. Tom Lamb was suffering at the finish and required medical attention. He was very dizzy and was taken away to medical centre where he was put on oxygen to raise his low blood pressure. Special thanks should be given to Dave and Viv , who stayed with him and made sure he was okay whilst I tried to get hold of his car key etc. Tom was ok after about 30 minutes or so, and we were able to return to the Hotel to wash off all that mud. The day before Tom said he was looking forward to the 11 pints of lager he was going to enjoy after the race……he had 5 lemonades and a game of darts and just about had the energy to read the paper. We returned on Monday, slightly stiffer but more wisened men , we had survived The Grizzly….just !

Robin Reports:

Can you bear the Grizzly?

So, I’ve ‘run’ the Grizzly.  It’s easy to say that in a little sentence, but it’s very difficult to sum up the whole experience, which started with hilly, icy and snowy cross country runs on Saturday mornings in January, and culminated in an over-loading of the senses on Sunday morning.  I can’t really compare the Grizzly with any experience that I‘ve had before, and that was part of the difficulty in preparing for the race.  Folk who’d done in previous years said ‘you’ll love it’ and folk who don’t run said ‘you’re mad’.  But we train for these things don’t we? (or most do: it was obvious that the occasion was too much for some poor souls).

So standing on the Seaton promenade on the chilly Sunday morning with a host of other nervous people was an odd experience.  There was a large number of Bedford Harriers doing it, so that made it a bit more familiar, and the main advantage was having Rob Bishop next to me; both of us saying ‘let’s not go off it too fast, but go ahead if you want to’. Ah ha, if only we had had the opportunity to go off fast:  perhaps for the first 100 yards, but once we on the energy sapping shingle, that was it, no chance of an early burst.  But we came off the shingle after a mile and thought, wow, proper surface, let’s run, only to be confronted shortly afterwards with a great meandering hill which made it difficult in places to do anything other than walk.

After a while I think we started judging the points on the hills where we had to walk and where we could start running again, and I think we did each other some good in that respect.  Rob was better at going downhill than I was; I didn’t quite have that madcap fearlessness as we plummeted down muddy slopes. But I was really pleased that I never had any problems in the lung department when going up hills. OK it started hurting the leg muscles, but I don’t think either of us got to that lung bursting stage.  And we did genuinely have a bit of energy left when we did a ‘sprint finish’ along the prom.

David Prior and Ian Kingstone kept popping up during the journey, and we exchanged pleasantries and entered into intellectual debates about the meaning of life on the way.

Amazing features:

That bog.  Let a child imagine what a bog would be like, create it and shove it on a hill in a wood. Dark brown gurpy sometimes waist-deep porridge.  I think that 200m (20 minutes?) was the most enjoyable bit, and in some perverse way, a bit of a rest!

Running a mile and a half on the beach (again) and then ascending the cliff on a zig zag path, before going up even further on the Stairway to Heaven…followed by more hill!

Slip-sliding along slurry –filled lanes.

Going past a pub with folk supping ale…sadists!

The marshals were terrific and friendly.  Loads said, lord, Bedford must be empty today, there’s so many yellow shirted Harriers!  I said, look at Bedford and you’ll see why we left!

Waiting at least half a hour for Rob to answer a call of nature.  I’m sure we could have won it if he hadn’t stopped.

Slipping and burying my nose in the mud.  That Devon soil smells good!

Wading through a freezing cold stream

There were so many other things that will come back, I’m sure.  But it was a great day, except that I got my socks dirty.

Finally I must thank Rob for staying with me and Steve Gaunt for persuading me and many others into embarking on this adventure.  It was truly a memorable experience.  I must also thank Steve, Viv and Lesley for arranging the training runs on Saturday mornings; without them we would probably have ended up as exhausted hulks in the bog.

Southern Counties Cross-Country Championships
(Saturday 24th January 2008)

A dank and horrible Saturday saw the Harriers diehards turn up for a long and winding 15,000 metres of mud, mud and more mud. A Harriers team which at one point had peaked at 13, dipped down to 7 pushed back up to 9 before realistically plummeting down to a poultry 5 took up the Gauntlet of the 2009 Southern X Country Championships.

Steve Earley was early and informed us that the course was 4 laps with each lap consisting of 1 long hill, (800m at least) which was covered in mud, mud and more mud.  After a brief warm up and a quick photo by Lamb and Lamb Photographers, we made our way to the start.  The horn blew I apologised to those around me and the gun was fired……….we were off!

Steve Earley sped off, Gareth Waite followed with myself, Tom Lamb and Bill Billington bringing up the rear.  All the Harriers ran well from Steve in 152nd through to Bill who managed two and a half laps before common sense prevailed and he retired before the coffee ran out in the refreshment hall.

The official results are given below:

Steve Earley (152nd) in 1h01m44s

Gareth Waite (268th) in 1h06m30s

Al Vile (503rd) in 1h17m06s

Tom Lamb (578th) in 1h22m31s

Bill Billington DNF

The winner skipped round in a mere 51m08s! (show off!)

I would like to say that overall that this was a good team performance but as a team was 6 to score and we only fielded 5 I can’t!  Therefore 5 great performances of absolute grit and determination were given on the day by the Harriers in what was just an appetizer to The National X Country Champs at Parliament Hill on February 24th 2009.

As usual my thanks to those that competed.

Goodbye Farewell and Amen

The 1st lady Harrier was Kathy Horsman in 2:06:04 followed by Bev Hayes in 2:16:22 and Renette Wolvaardt in 2:21:19.

Three Harriers ran in the first race of the Wellingborough Multi-terrain Series. In the 10k, Sarah Lee  ran 44:11 and Tim Price  finished in 45:52. Katarina Darcy ran in the 5k and crossed the line in 32:37.

Bedfordshire XC Championships
&
Winter Chicks Chase 5K
(Saturday 10th January 2008)

On what was a bit of a chilly day, the Harriers performed well at the Bedfordshire XC championships at Shuttleworth. The first three Harriers to finish in the 12k senior mens and vets race were  Adam Mills (6th), Tony Dadd (7th) and Stephen Earley(8th). The first three Harriers to finish in the 6k senior ladies and vets race were Renee Corbett  (4th), Sally Cartwright (5th) and Veronica Singleton (15th).  Bob Wells won the MV60 plus title and Judy Prior won the LV60 plus title .

The Harriers won the Senior Mens Team Award, the Male Vets 40 Team Award and the Senior Ladies Team Award.  The Harriers ladies vets team were third. 26 Harriers ran in the race.

Alastair Vile Reports on the Race:

The 2009 Bedfordshire X Country Champs were held at Shuttleworth College on the coldest day of the year.  So cold in fact that the course although trampled over by hundreds of athletes never thawed and remained frozen throughout the day!

The first race for the Harriers was the Senior Ladies and Vets race which consisted of 2 3k (frozen) laps of the college grounds in sub zero degrees.  As defending champions of the Senior Ladies team title the Harriers had a lot to live up too but as expected they didn't disappoint.  A strong run by Renee Corbett saw her finishing in 4th chased home by Sally Cartwright in 5th and Veronica Singleton in 15th to regain the Senior Ladies Team Title. Both Sally 1st FV40 and Veronica 1st FV45 won their respective age groups as well as being part of the victorious Senior Ladies team and the Vets team which finished 3rd, another fantastic result.  The next Harriers home were Sarah Janes 16th, Rosie Harper 20th, Lucy Fensome 23rd, Beverley Tredgett 24th, Pippa Milton 26th, Jenny Cull 27th and finally Judy Prior who apart from finishing in 31st to bring the Harriers home also became FV60 County Champion - well done Judy.

The men were greeted by the news that they had to run 4 3k (frozen) laps of the College grounds as well as follow the great earlier performances of the Ladies and just like their female counterparts they didn't disappoint.  With some great team packing the first Harrier home was Adam Mills in 6th closely followed by Tony Dadd 7th and Steve Earley 8th, Simon Fawcett 13th, Gareth Waite 24th and the Anchor Man - Matt Burgin in 30th.  This was enough to see the Harriers team clinch the Senior Mens title with 80 points over Ampthill & Flitwick Flyers who finished in second with 90 points, this was far closer than the Vets team race which the Harriers took with ease.  The next Harrier home was Alistair Vile 32nd, Richard Piron 36th and 1st MV55, Justin Openshaw 38th, Tony Barnes 46th, Richard Watson 50th, Noel Jones 53rd, James Wallbank 59th and Chris Fadden 63rd.

The only sad part of the day was that this was to be the final leg of the Bob Wells 2008/2009 last race Tour!  Bob along with Bill Billington were competing in the MV60 and MV70 races respectively and neither of the Gentlemen concerned could have performed any better!  Like the Ladies before them 2 3k (frozen) laps stood between them and the title.  Bill stormed home to take the MV70 title, whilst I am out of superlatives to describe a man that I have been privileged and honoured to compete against and know over the last few years.  Bob flew round both laps finishing over 3 minutes ahead of his closest rival winning the MV60 championship with ease.

This was a fantastic day for the Harriers with some equally fantastic results in both individual and team categories.  I would like to thank everyone who ran in such arctic conditions as well as those who turned out to cheer and snap photos. A special thank you to Gareth Waite for the coffee but not to Tony Dadd who decided to scald me with it!

Bob has also asked me to remind people that there are still some Bob Wells 2008/2009 last races Tour! T-shirts left in Large and Extra Large although some have been slightly damaged with soup stains.

Goodbye, Farewell & Amen.

 Al Vile

Four Harriers ladies took part in the Winter Chicks Chase 5k including Samantha Linney who won the race in a new pb of 24:33 - well done Samantha.  Lynne Greenard was the 3rd lady to finish in 25:02, Linda Payne was 14th in a new pb of 31:09 and Katarina Darcy was 15th in 31:21
